Las Gigantes Win Soccer Tournament

The under 14 girls team will compete in the California Cup in Palm Springs in March.

In a 3-1 victory over Davis on Sunday, the San Bruno Las Gigantes won the AYSO Section 2 Tournament.

The under 14 girls team will compete in the California Cup in Palm Springs in March, said Trish Estelita, co-commissioner of Region 249 AYSO.

"I'm so excited for them," Estelita said, adding that the victory is all the more special since the team lost in the final game last year to penalty kicks.

Six of the players were on Las Gigantes team last year and they were lead by the same coaches, Brian Hafter and James Estelita, this year, she said.

The sectional tournament included 44 teams from Northern California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, Estelita said.

Ken Rhoads, director for AYSO Section 2, said in an email that he couldn't recall anytime that a San Bruno sent a team to the California Cup.

San Bruno also scored two second place winners: the Strikers, under 12 boys and under 10 boys. Five teams from San Bruno

Las Gigantes already have a victory celebration planned in Southern California. "We are going to take them to Disneyland while we are there," Estelita said.
