With New Arts Building, Cap Looks to Visually Inspire Students

San Bruno Patch gets a tour of the new building with art teacher Maria Sky, who spearheaded the project.

Capuchino High School recently held a grand opening for its new arts building, a $6 million project that was paid for with Measure M and grant funding as well as money from the San Mateo Union High School District. The completely redone building is both functional and visually appealing, and the school hopes it will pave the way for the next generation of great artists from San Bruno. A Second Act For Hillbarn's ‘Short-Order Shortstop’

Former Skyline College and Capuchino High baseball standout Dale Brewer's bizarre cheeseburger ritual got national press. He’s now acting on the local community theater circuit.

A greasy cheeseburger got Dale Brewer featured in Sports Illustrated. And more than a decade after one of the wackiest sports rituals you've probably ever heard of put the former local baseball standout on the national stage, it was the inspiration of his 7-year-old daughter that landed him on a physical stage. Brewer, a Co-State Player of the Year when he led Skyline College to a Coast Conference title in 1994, has found a new calling. He’s now an actor in the local community theater circuit, and part of an ensemble performing in "The Producers" at Foster City's Hillbarn Theatre. "The Producers" is in its third week with eight remaining performances including tonight’s 8 p.m. show. The finale is May 27. Brewer, 40, said he got the …

In the Brushstroke

A Painting Adventure at Skyline College

As I worked on one of my recent paintings, I realized there is a challenge in painting miles of beauty.

The colors and the expansive views from the hilltops in San Bruno are always inspiring. Sometimes the colors are softly muted and other times they appear saturated, filled with intense hues. This  painting of the westward view from Skyline College has a combination of both. Selecting what to paint in these expansive views is always a challenge. I usually select a color or subject with shapes that are interesting. This time I decided to paint EVERYTHING in my view on a very large canvas, sized 30 by 40 inches. After priming my canvas with a warm rusty-yellow color, I was ready to sketch the view. The big shapes of the ocean and distant hills filled the top fourth of the canvas. The rest seemed like a mass of greens with no distinguishing …

City Employee a Featured Performer in Musical Starting This Week

The Bay Area Educational Theater Company will be presenting "Honk!" in Redwood City on Friday. The musical will be playing through April 29 and features performers from throughout the Peninsula and East Bay.

As the city's recreation services manager, Danielle Brewer plans all kinds of activities to keep residents active and having fun. The theater company's next performance, "Honk!" is Friday at the Cañada College Mainstage Theater in Redwood City.
