Should We Charge More for Guests Staying at County Hotels?

A June 5 ballot measure would raise the transient occupancy tax paid by guests at hotels in unincorporated areas from 10 percent to 12 percent.

San Mateo County voters will consider several business-related taxes and a handful of school parcel tax and bond measures in the June 5 primary. Among the most contentious measures on the ballot are a proposed transient occupancy tax increase and business license taxes for commercial parking and car rental businesses in unincorporated areas of the county. Proponents of all three measures include Board of Supervisors President Adrienne Tissier, Supervisor Carole Groom and San Mateo County Schools Superintendent Ann Campbell. Opponents include the citizens' group Taxpayers for a Strong Economy and the general managers of the Best Western Grosvenor and San Francisco Airport Marriott hotels. Measure U would raise the transient occupancy tax …

Photos: Romney Met By Protesters in Redwood City

The Republican presidential candidate came to town for a fundraising dinner early this evening at the Hotel Sofitel.

Protesters from three groups were waiting for Presidential candidate Mitt Romney when he arrived for an exclusive fundraising dinner tonight in Redwood City. Activist groups protesting outside the 5:30 p.m. reception included Occupy Redwood City, Raging Grannies and the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment. Raging Grannies member Ruth Robertson said her group adopted "billionaire personas" as they stood outside the event with signs mocking people who were driving in to attend. Protesters wore fake fur and held signs reading "Corporations are People, Too," she said. "We think by mocking them it might bring them down a rung or two," Robertson said. Members of Occupy Redwood City also attended the protest as "pretend" …

Republicans End Convention With Renewed Conviction

After a weekend of panels, speakers and discussion, California Republicans have a lot to think about and work towards moving forward.

This weekend, nearly 1,000 Republicans gathered in Burlingame to share ideas, discuss policies and learn from Republican leaders during the California Republican Party Spring Convention. The convention featured a series of speakers during dinner banquets and luncheons. The first speaker was Republican National Committee Co-Chair Sharon Day, who kicked off the convention Friday by urging Republican leaders to think in new ways to retain young voters. She spoke again later that night, along with Congressman Darrell Issa and Congressman and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, denouncing the Obama administration and expressing the need for Republicans to join together in the fight to reclaim Washington in 2012. Newt Gingrich was the featured speaker…

Republicans Tell Californians: You Can Elect A Conservative

GOP members tell Californians not to give up hope.

Tim Pawlenty, former governor of Minnesota and presidential hopeful, told California Republicans that it is possible to elect a conservative candidate in a state often deemed too liberal and overlooked by most campaigners. Pawlenty spoke to about 250 supporters Saturday night at the California Republican Convention, about half the number that attended Newt Gingrich’s speech earlier in the day.  “If I can be a conservative governor in Minnesota, we can do it anywhere,” he said, noting that Minnesota has elected liberal politicians such as Al Franken and Walter Mondale. He told Californians that they live in the most entrepreneurial and innovative state in the country, and they must fight to keep it that way, arguing that only lower taxes …

Young Republicans Blast Public Schools, Liberal Arts Majors and Government Waste

Over a hundred young people showed to speak their minds and listen to a panel of model Republicans.

Energy was high Saturday evening at a Twitter-infused Young Republican Town Hall where panelists attacked liberal arts majors, the public education system and government regulation and waste. The panel, a handful of young men from the fields of politics, law and business, fielded questions from the town hall moderator, KSFO’s conservative talk show host Brian Sussman, the audience and Twitter on the topic of economic and job issues impacting young adults. Joseph Sanchis, president of the California Young Republican Federation, which hosted the town hall, began by setting what he sees as a dire scene in America today. “It’s no surprise, the economic situation we are in today, especially for young people,” he said. “It is probably the worst …

Gingrich Blames Obama For High Gas Prices

Keynote speaker of GOP California Convention pounced on President Obama during afternoon address.

Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich blamed the Obama Administration for the recent spike in oil prices and promised supporters at the California Republican Convention today that he would sign an executive order if elected to approve the Keystone XL pipeline project. With dozens of supporters holding “$2.50 a gallon” signs behind him during his speech at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel Saturday, Gingrich admonished what he called the Obama Administration’s systemic failure in energy policy, and accused it of deliberately raising gas prices. “When you fill up your tank, you can think of gas prices as the Obama tax,” he said. The national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.67 as of today, according to AAA. Gingrich …

Republican Party Strives to Engage Voters

The California GOP Convention officially kicked off Friday afternoon in Burlingame with a message: The Republican Party has a mission to engage voters by branding candidates and with regards to President Obama say 'Enough is enough.'

The California Republican Convention kicked off this afternoon with party leaders adamant about finding revolutionary ways to brand their candidates and further engage voters. Inside the Burlingame Hyatt, a rousing speech from the state’s party Co-Chair Sharon Day during the executive luncheon was followed by a discussion of digital voting methods that could both change the way Republicans interact with their voters and how they market their candidates. “What we have to do together is make sure Barack Obama is a one-term president,” said Day to emphatic applause from the more than 80 Republicans who gathered inside the dining room. “We have to take back control of the Senate, and we have to send more congressman to Washington, D.C. to …
