It seemed like yesterday that we said goodbye to PDG Bob Marshall after his untimely death in May, only to be struck by another jolt to the community with the tragic death of Lion Isaac Mejia by a car accident on the evening of September 8. We are terribly shocked and saddened, and our hearts go out to Lucy, Francesca and the entire Mejia family.
Life as we know it will never be the same.
It was just last June 1st when Lion Smitty anointed his close friend the well-deserved “Lion of the Year” - and it was just last month when Lion Isaac simply donated a tasteful dinner to his beloved Lions - all in the spirit of saving the club money. He will always be remembered for his smile and generosity. He was a presence that will be sorely missed.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, September 18 at St. Robert’s Catholic Church, where over a 1,000 standing-room-only mourners paid their last respects to a beloved neighborhood brother. I was honored to provide the eulogy prior to Lucy Mejia’s heartfilled goodbye to her loving husband.
A reception followed at the Senior Center where family and friends shared their fond memories. Francesca sang a song and spoke of what will keep her father in her heart forever. All in all it was an emotional day - only a start to adjusting to life without Lion Isaac.
Donations in his memory may be made to the San Bruno Leos Clubs c/o San Bruno Lions Club, P.O. Box 242, San Bruno, CA 94066 or the Shriners Hospital at shrinershq.org.
