Sept. 6 - (San Mateo County, CA) - A petition to create Design Tech High School, an approximately 500-student charter high school, has been filed with the San Mateo Union High School District.

With over 300 signatures on the petition, the level of community support for the proposed school has exceeded expectations.

“We are delighted by the tremendous outpouring of support from parents, educators, and community members for Design Tech High,” said founder Ken Montgomery.  “Our school will offer a personalized high-school experience emphasizing innovation and the use of technology.”

The school board has 30 days in which to hold a public hearing on the proposal.

Local community members are excited about the breakthrough secondary school where students will learn design thinking, as taught at Stanford University’s d.school (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design), and will learn to apply a design-thinking approach to real-world problems.

Also exciting to the community is that this initiative is completely homegrown.  Montgomery, an assistant principal at Capuchino High School, is working with a team of local educators and parents to found Design Tech High.

“We are so lucky to have great public high schools in our district,” Montgomery said.  “What we are proposing will support and supplement what is already here as well as taking advantage of our proximity to the Silicon Valley.”

Along with the signatures, proponents of the new school have collected numerous letters of support from local business owners, accomplished academics, and innovation partners including Stanford’s d.school and CK-12, a company dedicated to using technology for improving education.

Design Tech High already has been awarded a $100,000 planning grant by Next Generation Learning Challenges to help with costs associated with opening the new high school in the fall of 2014. Next Generation said its committee members “found your collective vision bold and inventive, promising academically, potentially sustainable and scalable, and plausible to succeed because of the capacity you will be bringing to the effort.”
