Things To Know: San Bruno Grade Separation Update

San Bruno Grade Separation

Overview
The $147 million San Bruno Grade Separation Project will elevate the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce traffic congestion to and from Highway 101 in the City of San Bruno.

In addition, a new elevated Caltrain station will be constructed between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, replacing the existing station at Sylvan Avenue. A total of 201 parking spaces and a “kiss and ride” lot will serve the station at the site of the former San Bruno Lumber.

With respect to pedestrian safety and amenities, the project will provide three pedestrian underpasses - one in the vicinity of Sylvan Avenue, one at the new station and another between Euclid Avenue and Walnut Street. Additionally, elevators will provide easy access for Caltrain customers. Streets and sidewalks, including those at Posy Park, also will be improved.

Construction Updates

Day work will occur Monday, Aug. 5, to Friday, Aug. 9, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This week, crews will install drywall and lighting at the project site, and set panels. Crews also will paint the exterior and continue installing the Huntington elevator.

Night work will occur Sunday, Aug. 4, to Thursday, Aug. 8, between 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. this week. Crews will be working on the San Mateo and San Bruno bridge platforms, and installing reflected ceiling hardware. There will be some construction noise, but crews will work as quietly as possible.

During the month of August, road closures will occur on San Mateo and San Bruno avenues. Construction crews will continue excavating and removing portions of the roadway to lower streets and allow for greater vehicular clearance under the crossings. Once completed, the clearance for the intersection will be approximately 15 feet. Road work at Angus Avenue was completed at the end of July. The following is a list of road closure times and dates:

• San Mateo Avenue, between Huntington and San Bruno avenues, will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12.

• San Bruno Avenue, between First and Huntington avenues, will be closed on two separate occasions. The first portion of the work will require partial closure of the street from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19. The second portion will completely shut down San Bruno Avenue at Huntington Avenue. That closure is tentatively scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2.

During the closures, Caltrain will establish detour signs for pedestrians and motorists to help with traffic flow. During the full shutdown of San Bruno Avenue, electronic signs will be displayed on San Bruno Avenue and on El Camino Real directing traffic around the closure.  Night work will be done in accordance with Caltrain and city agreements and ordinances. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
