'Carry the Light' Excerpt: Eating Your Young

In this Belmont writer's poem, she talks about the bond between mother and baby, in all its light-filled love and unspoken darkness. "Carry the Light" is an anthology of stories, poems and essays that were submitted for the county fair's literary contest.

Editor's Note: For the first time in the history of the San Mateo County Fair, a 300-page anthology has been published that includes more than 100 stories, poems and essays from writers who submitted award-winning work for the fair's literary contest. The idea was the brainchild of Bardi Rosman Koodrin, a San Bruno resident who runs the fair's literary contest, and the anthology, titled "Carry the Light," features work from many Peninsula writers.

This poem, which appears in the San Mateo County Fair anthology Carry the Light, is a playful Villanelle about the bond between mother and baby, in all its light-filled love and unspoken darkness.

From p. 45, "Eating Your Young"

Some animals eat their young alive

Pure. Full of new life force

Who wouldn’t want to imbibe?

Home, finally I have arrived

When Sophie kisses me on the lips

Some animals eat their young alive

The vampire drinks to survive

Taste that energy, feel it pulse the body

Who wouldn’t want to imbibe?

I squeeze her tight, so tight she cries

I release but want to crush again, devour her as

Some animals eat their young alive

But really she is the vampire, I surmise

Sucking the life force out of my breasts, my body

Who wouldn’t want to imbibe?

Taking me in, milk in. Transforming she writhes

A new body—something, someone pure

Some animals eat their young alive

Who wouldn’t want to imbibe?

Mr, Kiely, When they cut school days, isn't the savings in that the employees who directly work withRead More and for the children are deprived of that many days of pay??? Do the principals also lose 5 days pay? Does Hutt lose 5 days pay? Do the board members lose 5 days worth of their stipend. In other words, is the bad tasting medicine swallowed by everyone in the school district in a sincere effort to cure the ills of this school district Or is it just the teachers and the classified workers who are called upon to attempt a restoral of good health, the direct result of poor management and less than admirable leadership that has brought about ths crisis??

Mr, Kiely, Somewhere I heard that they were considering stopping contracting out PE at a largeRead More savings. Was that discussed last week? I was not abe to stay the entire evening. I question why they would have contracted for PE at the elementary level. Isn't that what recess and the balance of lunch time was for? Physical activity??? Thank you in advance for your always knowledgeable answer to my questions.

District cutting school days? The District is showing an agreement with the union which will saveRead More $200K. It doesn't show where the money is coming from, but the amount makes it look like they are cutting 5 days from the calendar. Dr. Hutt said at the last meeting that the length of the school year was still under negotiation.
