Beyond Burgers: Tasting the Rainbow in San Bruno

Getting something other than traditional American food is easy around these parts.

We all know there is no shortage of good eating in the Bay Area. Here, we can bask in burritos all summer long, fill up on pho on chilly nights and linger over linguine any time we want. Our fancy feasts go way beyond a nice steak around here. So for those who are looking beyond classic “American” fare for their next meals, we’ve put together a few favorite destinations for dining from different lands.

A fun, group-friendly environment is a great feature of this El Camino Real restaurant, but the food is No. 1 here. Homestyle Filipino dishes like sisig and adobo greet guests in a fast-paced but casual environment.

Specialty curries, snacks, sweets and more await diners at this Fijian-style Indian restaurant. Amma’s has plenty of seating, and specializes in food with a homemade taste. Not your typical Indian eatery, this San Mateo Avenue restaurant is half-market, enabling guests to take home the spices used in their dishes to try to recreate their meals at home.

Dine in or take out your meal from Au’s, a longstanding eatery on Cherry Avenue. Feast on succulent spareribs, Kung Pao prawns and other Chinese specialties, or delight in their barbecue and noodle dishes.

True, Araujo La Taqueria serves its share of burgers and fries, but their real specialties are their Mexican treats like tacos, quesadillas and nachos. Enjoy the patio seating and the variety of foods this eatery has to offer at any time of day—the taqueria is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sajj’s intimate environment is perfect for dates and quiet dinners, but banquet seating is also available for big groups.
