Business Looks to Become Hub of New Activity for Vacant Building

A new business has plans to open soon at 444 San Mateo Avenue, while another storefront in the downtown building remains vacant.

For a while, it may have seemed like the building next to Cleo’s was going to stay vacant for a long time, just like many of the storefronts along San Mateo Avenue.

runs a call center out of the second floor of the building at 444B San Mateo Avenue, but the two businesses at 444A San Mateo Avenue and 442 San Mateo Avenue have long been gone.

A new business called The Hub is opening soon at 444A San Mateo Avenue. According to the city’s website, the space used to be a scrapbook store.

The Hub will serve as a place where people can come in and use computers and get on the Internet. The business will also be offering promotions to customers to win more Internet time and prizes, said one of the managers of the business, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it isn’t yet open.

has turned in an application to the city to expand its restaurant into the other storefront in the building, said Aaron Aknin, the city's community development director.

That proposal is expected to before the city's Architecture Review Committee and Planning Commission soon, Aknin said.
