Nearby Safeway Reopens, Creates 50 New Jobs

The new store opens its doors Friday at 8 a.m.

A redone, state-of-the-art grocery store will open its doors in Millbrae Friday, bringing with it an additional 50 jobs, according to officials.

San Bruno does not have a Safeway of its own, but locals frequent the South San Francisco locations.

The grand opening of the new Safeway store will occur on Friday at 8 a.m. where shoppers can roam the interiors of the Safeway "lifestyle format." The new format features expanded departments such as a bakery, pharmacy, deli, floral, produce, full-service meat and seafood departments and a large selection of organic foods, according to Safeway Public and Government Affairs representative Keith Turner.

An outdoor mezzanine, a parking structure and a Starbucks are all part of the new amenities featured in the new Safeway.

The 54,000-square-foot store replaces a smaller Safeway that opened in Millbrae in 1962. The store will also feature a 60-foot-long mural restored from the old supermarket.

The new Millbrae Safeway will employ 150 employees.
