Straw Hat Pizza Remains Vacant After Family Emergency Leads to Closure

The pizza parlor has been vacant for more than a year. What should replace it?

Seeing vacant storefronts is nothing new along San Mateo Avenue.

So it is no surprise when a business closes there and nothing replaces it for a while.

That has been the case with Straw Hat Pizza, which shut down more than a year ago.

But what happened?

I was able to find out a little more information from the real estate company in charge of selling the property.

Apparently, the owner of the pizza place decided to close the business because he had to go back to the Philippines to take care of a family member, according to an agent who works for Prudential San Bruno.

What, if anything, do you think should replace the business?

Location: 495 San Mateo Ave.

Owner:

Assessed value of property: $879,995

Who to contact: Belinda Planas, 650-871-3614, www.bplanas.prucal.com.

I didn't even know there was a Straw Hat on San Mateo Ave. I know the article says the owner had to go back to the Philippines but is it also possible it closed because it couldn't compete with the Papa John's that's down the street

The Straw Hat opened up, closed after @ 2 months, re-opened @ 6 months later, then closed.

I'm not sure about that. There are other pizza places nearby too, and they all seem to cater to different people.

There used to be a store/chain called: Pic-A-Dilly. Those kinds of clothing stores for girls/women would draw customers looking for a bargain. After shopping at a clothing stores, they'd stop for a bite at the local bakery, or even one of the restaurants on San Mateo Avenue.

How about the vacant bldg/lot known as the "Lee's Buffet" on El Camino?
It's been such an eyesore for years. Making it a Parking Lot for the businesses nearby would be great.

How about a bike rental/repair shop?
