Bay Area History, Museums and Chinese Food in Words

Our picks for the long President's Day weekend.

With President Obama visiting the Bay Area this evening, our President’s Day weekend is already off to the right start. If, like most of us, you are unable to hear our current leader of the free world speak at a business and technology conference tonight, we’ve rounded up some other ideas on how to celebrate our founding fathers’ achievements this weekend.

  • In the spirit of looking back upon the events and accomplishments that made America what it is today, take a trip back in time at Redwood City’s . Showcasing the history of San Mateo County, the museum is located inside the historic 1910 Old County Courthouse and features exhibits and interactive displays that will entertain the whole family. Though not open Monday, the museum will welcome visitors all weekend.
  • If the weather permits, take the history lesson outdoors and visit one of San Francisco’s many historical areas, including the memorials and old military buildings in the Presidio. Or take the family to Fisherman’s Wharf and explore Maritime National Historic Park, where you can enjoy guided waterfront tours and even climb aboard historic vessels like the sailing ship Balclutha.
  • Combine current holidays by exploring the history of Chinese food in America with Jennifer 8. Lee, author of the new book The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food. Lee will read from and sign copies of her new book at the Chinatown Public Library in San Francisco this Saturday from 2:30-4pm.
  • Check out in Tanforan as they bring their “Biggest Home Sale” to a close. Promising huge savings on items throughout the store’s home furnishing department, the sale ends Tuesday.
  • President’s Day weekend being the last three-day weekend until May, take advantage of the extra day off work and school by getting away. While the weather may not cooperate with outdoors plans, check out deals on local hotels near family-friendly hotspots such as Monterey Bay Aquarium or Sausalito’s Bay Area Discovery Museum, and keep the kids entertained away from home. As a bonus, the Discovery Museum will treat visitors to a Lunar New Year celebration featuring performances, activities and a Lion Dance on Monday.
