With a Celebration, Hensels Break Ground for New Home After Fire

The couple, who have lived in the Crestmoor neighborhood for nearly 40 years, became the first family to break ground on a new home since the neighborhood was devastated by the Sept. 9 fire.

City officials, firefighters, residents and even Congresswoman Jackie Speier all gathered today at the site of Bob and Nancy Hensel's former home to celebrate the groundbreaking of their new home, the first rebuild in the neighborhood since the Sept. 9 gas explosion and fire.

The Hensels, who have lived in the Crestmoor neighborhod for nearly 40 years, were one of the 38 homeowners who lost their homes in the fire.

To kick off the celebration, the Hensels and their children popped champagne—a tradition the family has been carrying on since the disaster—and invited family and friends.
