San Bruno Community Art Project, Part II

To Build a Mosaic Wall in Memory of the Disaster of September 9, 2010

All San Bruno residents, past and present, are invited to participate in the creation of a memorial mosaic wall, honoring the victims of the explosion and fire on September 9, 2010.  This free community art project is sponsored by, and located at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2400 Rosewood Drive.

In March we will continue our work, building the mosaic outdoors on our west wall.  We will set broken ceramic tile and other ceramic pieces into the design, including what was made by the community in Part I (completed in February), grouting and polishing the wall on our last day.

Workshop 2: March 14-17

Thursday, March 14:     4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Friday, March 15:          4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, March 16:     10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, March 17:        12:30 - 4:00 p.m. (age 13 & over)

Residents of the Glenview/Longview area and their families are invited to contribute durable artifacts to be permanently incorporated into the mosaic.  Please contact us for further details.

Mosaic artist Leslie Scott will again lead the workshops as we create our wall.  Leslie is a gifted artist, skilled craftswoman, and regularly leads community-installed mosaic art projects.  You may view her work at www.on-the-wall.net.

Our wall depicts healing from chaos and pain, with prominent images of a phoenix rising from ashes, healing waters, a hope-laden rainbow, and a mighty tree protecting 38 houses (representing the homes destroyed in the fire) along poppy-strewn, rolling hills of San Bruno.

As in February, you and your family are invited to participate in any or all of the workshops.  No artistic ability is needed, and people of every age and ability can participate. People who attended the first workshop remarked that it helped with their healing process, was easier to participate than they expected (especially those who felt that they were not artistic or “crafty”), and that it was quite enjoyable and satisfying work.

Please plan to spend at least 2 hours with us, on any or all of the workshop days.  To best coordinate our work, we would like for you to register in advance as to the dates and times you plan to attend. (You can always change those plans as needed!)

The Memorial Wall will be dedicated on Palm Sunday, March 24, immediately following worship.

Children under 13 years need an accompanying adult present.  Please wear comfortable, washable work clothes, and please join us for a wonderful experience with your friends and neighbors!
