Real Estate is About People

The goal of this post is to talk a little bit about the psychology and emotions that real estate agents work with in real estate transactions. When working in real estate sales the agent is working directly with people and often helping them with the biggest investment, dream, and sometimes burden in a person’s life.

There are times when we handle the very exciting sale of a first time buyer purchasing their first home and there are times when we handle a foreclosure, death, or divorce.

There are the celebratory transactions such as a couple getting married, starting a family, or relocating for a new job position. Then there are challenging times when one looses a job and can no longer make payments, a family member passes, or a couple ends up in divorce.

Sometimes there are interesting transaction, you know the ones that make you go hmmm…. such as someone who is an extreme collector or has an eccentric hobby! A home tells a lot about a person and very often the real estate agent is the only one to see this, especially if the homeowner has been private over the years.

I enjoy helping people in different stages of their lives especially in real estate. It allows me to take the time to take some of the burden off of their situation whether its happy or sad. The purchase or sale of a home is usually overwhelming if its not something you do everyday.

It probably wouldn’t hurt for a real estate agent to have some kind of experience in customer service or psychology! I believe my experience in waitressing, bartending, and tutoring have lent a hand in having some listening skills. I had recently thought of a nursing or counseling career because I feel comfortable assisting people with acute situations!

Real estate isn’t for everyone but if you enjoy the service industry, caring for people, mixed with a little business paperwork and negotiating, this job just might be for you!
