Shelter Creek Gives Edge to Emergency Training

The residents competed in "rescue missions," similar to those in the "Amazing Race," to win a prize and learn about emergency preparedness.

If you passed by the Shelter Creek condominium complex on Saturday, you might have mistaken it for a set of the TV show, "Amazing Race."

The complex held its first Emergency Challenge, where about 40 residents and volunteers took part in the scavenger hunt-like event to learn about the importance of preparedness.

The residents were divided into four teams and they had to complete 12 "rescue missions," from finding a missing child to tending to a victim with broken limbs, by navigating their way around the 46-acre property. The winning team all received fully equipped emergency preparedness packs.

Ronnie Rosen, the general manager of the Shelter Creek condominium owners' association, said the event was a huge success that helped bring the residents together.

"With these kinds of events, if you do them enough, you might not be as panicked when the real thing happens," Rosen said. "And anytime you put a bunch of people together, you make some kind of bond."

San Bruno firefighter Scott Waldvogel and police Officer Marc Lillie assisted the complex with the challenge.
