Ron Cox, Former Foster City Mayor, Artichoke Joe's Construction Consultant, Dies at 61

Former Foster City Mayor and longtime Lions Club member Ron Cox passed away on Saturday. He was 61.

Cox lived in Foster City for 24 years, and dedicated himself to the community. Last year,  for his volunteer work and years of service to the city. Cox owned Cox and Sons Construction.

"Ron Cox leaves an indelible mark in the hearts of those he worked with and served in this community," said Foster City Mayor Linda Koelling. "He unselfishly volunteered his time especially on behalf of the youth. I was honored to have served with him and be able to call him a friend."

Despite his medical issues, Cox remained active in the Foster City community until his death, helping collect $14,000 to keep the Fourth of July fireworks show alive at Leo Ryan Park just two weeks ago.

"His last community accomplishment was the fireworks display for the fourth," Koelling said. "When it seemed that the council was leaning towards not having the fireworks this year, Ron eloquently voiced his opinion about that  and with the help of the Lions Club they raised money to help offset the cost for the day."

Cox was a member of the City Council from 2000 to 2007, and served as mayor three times. As mayor, he championed the concept of a fair mayoral rotation, despite having his own first term as mayor shortened because of it.

"Ron Cox was devoted to the betterment of all aspects of our community. He worked harder than anyone at promoting a good feeling for our town," said City Councilman and former Mayor Rick Wykoff. 

"He was truly a giant among mere mortals when it came to devoting himself," Wykoff said. "He can not be replaced and he will be missed beyond understanding. Foster City and Ron’s family have lost an irreplaceable icon."

In addition to serving on the council, Cox was a member of the  Committee and the Planning Commissioner for five years.  At the time of his death, he remained active in city government as a member of the Planning Commission.

"Ron epitomized service and commitment and is an inspiration to others.  He was selfless, always thinking and doing for others, at his own personal expense," said Foster City Police Captain Jon Froomin. "Our community will sorely miss him."

Cox's community service resume wasn't limited to city government. Cox was an active member of  since 1999. He was also an avid supporter of youth sports in Foster City, from organizing food preparation and distribution for AYSO and Little League fundraisers to maintenance projects such as construction of scorekeeper booths. Cox was a soccer and little league coach, served on the Little League Board of Directors and assisted in the development of the over 40 baseball program in Foster City.

"Foster City loses a good hearted and gentle soul," Koelling said.

According to the San Mateo Daily Journal, Cox is survived by his wife Carolyn and three children.

A memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at , followed by a reception at the . The Cox family has requested donations to the Foster City Lions Club in lieu of flowers.
