Community Corner

Hats Off to YouTube!

by Supervisor Warren Slocum

YouTube, located in San Bruno, is an amazing corporation.  Not only are they the largest video hosting website in the world with 1 billion (+) unique users each month, over 6 billion hours of video watched each month and 100 hours of video are uploaded every minute - they are gracious.  YouTube has rolled out the hospitality carpet for the connect13 conference that Assembly Member Kevin Mullin and I are co-hosting on October 23rd.  We could not find a better partner or host.

We are delighted to be convening local elected, appointed and community leaders at this event that will focus on civic engagement applications and strategies to “Strengthen Communities through Social Media” at YouTube.

Even though we are located in the heart of Silicon Valley amidst the technology leaders and giants, this is the first-ever conference held in San Mateo County, expressly for this leadership group.  As a tech geek, I am particularly looking forward to the speakers and the day, www.connectsmc.org

I wanted to recognize YouTube for being a good neighbor – one that said “Yes” immediately, has helped every step of the way, and wants local government leaders to use the technology for civic engagement, leadership, discourse, volunteerism and public good.
