Amber Alert Update: Baby Safe, Suspect Arrested in Mexico

The suspect and baby were found in Mexico.

Update Written by Joan Dentler:

The father of the two-week old infant abducted from his home in Sunnyvale this morning has been found unharmed, and his 22-year-old father has been arrested at a checkpoint in Mexico, according to a report by NBC Bay Area. The arrest comes less than 24 hours after an Amber Alert was issued.

Capt. Dave Pitts of the Sunnyvale Police Dept. said at a news conference Wednesday morning that the manhunt for the father, Mesuit Guler of Sunnyvale, began at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"He told the mother he was going to run errands," Pitts said. "And then he left with the child, sending her a text that he would cause harm to himself and the child if police were involved."

Pitts said the abduction appears to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Guler and his girlfriend over his desire to move out of state.

"She did not want to, and then that led to him taking the child," Pitts said. He said Guler had wanted to move "back to New York."

The baby's mother said Guler has friends in Mexico and might be headed in that direction, according to Pitts.

After reports that Guler’s vehicle had been spotted in San Diego, authorities in Sunnyvale were contacted Wednesday by the United States Border Patrol and told Gulder had been arrested by Mexican authorities.

The NBC Bay Area report says Guler was arrested on a $1 million warrant that Sunnyvale Investigators had obtained during the course of the investigation.

U. S. Border Patrol is coordinating with Mexican Authorities on the transfer of Guler and his son to U.S.

Updated at 11:30 a.m.:

An Amber Alert has been issued for a 2-week-old baby boy who was abducted by his father in Sunnyvale on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The infant, Henry Guler Romero, was taken from an apartment complex in the 900 block of Helen Avenue at about 4 p.m. Tuesday by the father, 22-year-old Mesut Guler, after he got into an argument with his girlfriend, the infant's mother.

The incident was reported to police at about 10:30 p.m.

He is believed to be driving a tan 2004 GMC Envoy with California license plate 6HIL892. The SUV has a large American eagle decal on the rear-view mirror, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Capt. Dave Pitts said the abduction appears to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Guler and his girlfriend over his desire to move out of state.

"She did not want to, and then that led to him taking the child," Pitts said.

He said Guler had wanted to move "back to New York."

The baby's mother said Guler has friends in Mexico and might be headed in that direction, according to Pitts.

"We did have some pings on his phone down in the San Diego area early this morning," Pitts said.

He said, however, that authorities don't think Guler has left the country.

"We don't believe he's crossed the border ... We don't have any reason to believe that at this time," Pitts said.

Guler has previously threatened to harm himself and the baby, police said.

Police are working with the FBI and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office on the investigation, he said.
