Crackdown Targets Drunk Drivers

Checkpoints throughout holiday season will also screen for license violations.

will conduct checkpoints throughout the holiday season in an effort to rein in drunk and impaired drivers in a campaign dubbed "Over the limit, under arrest."

This year's campaign will focus on the area of San Bruno Avenue and El Camino Real from the hours of 7pm-1am. Officers will also be checking driver's licenses.

Last year, drunk driving accidents killed 36 Californians and injured an additional 1,168  from Dec. 17 through the New Year's weekend.

Young men present a particularly high risk of danger, a police official said: Nearly one-quarter admit to riding with a drugged or inebriated driver in the past year.

"Keep the party off the road," Cmdr. Noreen Hanlon advised in a statement.
