Dozens of Drivers Cited in South San Francisco Distracted Driving Crackdown

By Bay City News Service:

South San Francisco police cited 53 people Friday for offenses such as talking on a cellphone, texting while driving and running a red light as part of a crackdown on distracted driving, a police lieutenant said.

The citations, issued by a team of officers, are in addition to hundreds already issued this month for similar offenses in South San Francisco, according to Lt. Keith Wall.

Friday's sweep was conducted in honor of Distracted Driving Month, but Keith said drivers should remember it is "never okay to hold and use a cellular telephone while driving to talk, text, read messages or read other data."

I'm not whining or complaining-I don't have anything to worry about. I am stating fact. The San Mateo counties police department time would be better spend solving the neighborhood robberies and returning people's property.

If the police really wanted to fill their coffers, all they would have to do is put their motorcycles on the road and sneak up on drivers. The city would be in the black after a couple of months. They need to raise the fine to $1,000 for the first offense. Texting is as bad or worse than drunk driving. I drive for a living and it seems to me that NO ONE seems to care about the no texting law. Especially young drivers. You have to hit them in their wallets for it to sink into them.

Bite Koch - I strongly disagree. The police have many rolls to fill, cops on patrol do not investigate robberies. I am not saying that investigating robberies is not important, however drivers today are completely unsafe. Each day I witness insane behavior on the road. Behavior that is jeopardizing people's lives. 53 citations for distracted driving, that is 53 opportunities that someone not paying attention could have killed someone. How many robberies per day? Less than 53 I am sure.

I've not only seen young idiots, but old farts as well talking on their phones while driving on our streets in SSF. Go ahead and give them a huge fine, maybe that will teach them no to do it anymore.
