DUI Checkpoint Set for Thursday

Failing a sobriety test could result in fees exceeding $10,000, police said.

The will conduct a DUI checkpoint Thursday in the area of San Bruno Avenue and El Camino Real.

Officers will be checking drivers for signs of alcohol or drugs. If a driver is found to be either drinking or impaired, police said, officers will conduct a sobriety test.

Those who fail the test could be arrested, have their car impounded, get their license suspended and accrue other expenses that could exceed $10,000, police said.

"DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes," said police Cmdr. Noreen Hanlon, "as well as being a valuable means for heightening awareness of the dangers of impaired driving."

Last year, some 148 people were arrested countywide for drunk driving.

The checkpoint will be operating from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.
