HAZMAT Team Fooled by Old Gasoline

Written by Bay City News:

San Mateo County fire officials spent much of the afternoon conducting a procedural investigation of the contents of a metal five-gallon can that was abandoned on a dirt patch on the side of the road in San Bruno only to find out it contained old gasoline.

According to Millbrae Fire Division Chief Ron Lavezzo, officials arrived at the scene of the 700 block of Shelter Creek Road just after 1 p.m. when someone reported an abandoned container holding nearly one gallon of unidentified liquid.

A full response was called and a 300-foot "hot zone" area was created while officials determined whether or not the liquid in the old metal paint bucket was hazardous, according to San Bruno and Millbrae Deputy Fire Chief Dave Downing.

"There were no fumes, the container was not leaking but we had to take all precautions," Downing said. "It was a very routine call but we made it a full incident and took samples to determine what the liquid was."

No one was injured or ever in danger, according to Lavezzo. The scene was cleared just before 4 p.m.
