In the predawn hours of Oct. 22, a San Bruno Police officer noticed a vehicle, ran the plate, and learned that it had been stolen from San Francisco.

That day Lt. Tim Mahon reported, “The officer followed the vehicle onto the 500 block of Poplar Ave, which is a dead end street. The officer activated his emergency lights. The driver of the vehicle proceeded to the end of the street. The officer followed the vehicle to the end of the block where he exited his patrol vehicle and ordered the driver to stop. The driver made a U-Turn and drove in the direction of the officer. The officer then discharged his firearm striking the driver. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether the officer was justified in using deadly force.
