Jail Term in High-Speed Chase

Man said he did not know police were pursuing him.

A Tracy man who led police on a high-speed chase ending in San Bruno then said he didn't realize police were following him will serve 8 months in the county jail beginning Sept. 24 for the April 2010 incident.

San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Clifford Cretan also placed Johnnie Lee Young III, 22, on three years' probation. Young pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count. In May, a jury found Young guilty of felony evasion.

A CHP officer testified that he was parked on I-280 Northbound when Young sped by doing 106 mph. The officer followed flashing his lights, but Young did not pull over, instead turning abruptly onto Highway 35.

Driving at a high rate of speed, Young lost control of his Pontiac at the San Bruno Avenue intersection, slid off the road and smashed into a post. A Palo Alto Veterans Administration sergeant witnessed the tail end of the chase as Young turned onto the avenue at a high speed, sending pedestrians scurrying to safety then finally driving into a street sign.

Young, then 21, told police he was late for work and did not realize an officer was pursuing him. Officers discovered he had been driving on a suspended license.
