Man Gets 4 Years in Prison for Armed Robbery of Taxi Driver in San Bruno

The armed robbery took place in August 2010 when 26-year-old Rajinder Kumar, a Fremont resident, pulled a handgun on the driver on San Bruno Avenue West near Alpine Way.

A Fremont man who was one of three men who took part in the armed robbery of a taxi driver last year in San Bruno pleaded no contest to carjacking on Thursday.

Rajinder Kumar, 26, admitted to one charge of carjacking and that he was the one who pulled a handgun on the driver on San Bruno Avenue West near Alpine Way, where he and Balraj Singh, 49, also of Fremont robbed the driver of his wallet and cell phone.

San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Lisa Novak sentenced Kumar to four years in state prison with 178 days already served, according to the district attorney's office.

In May, Singh, a fellow cabbie and the reported mastermind of the carjacking, was and three years probation for his role in the robbery.

In March, 41-year-old  to his role in the robbery but claimed that he didn't take part in the kidnapping and armed robbery of the taxi driver, only that he was the getaway driver.

According to San Bruno police, the taxi driver picked up Kumar and Balraj Singh at about 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 at the , a bar in Menlo Park.

They then directed the driver to take them to Daly City, where on the way they had him stop at a Redwood City apartment complex, get back on the freeway and exit in Millbrae, and take surface streets to San Bruno where Kumar pulled a BB gun on the driver, the district attorney’s office said.

The two men then reportedly robbed the driver before walking to another car where Raj Singh was waiting for them, the district attorney’s office said.

Police arrested all three men by following a trail of cell phone records.

Kevin Allen, Kumar's attorney, said Kumar feels remorse for his role in the robbery but that he was pulled into the situation unknowingly by two men who were nearly twice his age.

"In the long run, he realized he messed up," Allen said. "Now, he just wants to start life afresh."
