Natural Gas Forces Evacuation of Elementary School

PG&E crews were working in the area.

Written by Bea Karnes

A strong odor of natural gas forced the evacuation of El Crystal Elementary School in San Bruno Wednesday. No one was injured.

The children were bused to Parkside Intermediate School, where they were reunited with their parents.

The natural gas was released into the air by PG&E work crews at San Felipe and Acacia Ave. When staff at the school noticed the smell at 10:45 Wednesday morning, the District was contacted immediately.

The District contacted PG&E, which recommended the precautionary evacuation.

According to San Bruno Park School District Superintendent Dr. David Hutt, “San Mateo Union High School District was contacted with a request for emergency evacuation by bus.  Parkside was alerted to expect the evacuating student body and staff.  A GlobalConnect call was initiated, advising parents to pick up their children at Parkside. The overall time of evacuation went smoothly.”
