Trial Set to Begin for Man Accused of Leading Cops on Chase Following Fire

Authorities say the Millbrae man was up to no good when they spotted him lurking around a police perimeter set up after the Sept. 9, 2010, pipeline explosion. He claims he was simply "gawking" at the disaster.

The trial is set to begin for the man accused of following the Sept. 9, 2010, pipeline explosion.

Paul Anthony Lee, 35, of Millbrae will appear on Jan. 3 in the Redwood City Hall of Justice for trial.

Lee faces three felony counts for assaulting a police officer, evading authorities and allegedly running over a police officer's foot at the start of a pursuit that involved San Bruno and Daly City police, sheriff's deputies and the CHP.

Lee pleaded not guilty to all the charges at an arraignment hearing in November 2010.

He has been out of custody on $50,000 bail.

According to authorities, Lee was riding a motorcycle with a female passenger when he was confronted by San Bruno police amid suspicious circumstances on a perimeter police established to prevent looters in the early morning hours of Sept. 10. He fled the scene when police demanded that he produce identification.

At the time of his arrest, Lee was on probation after serving 2 ½ years in 2005 for attempted kidnapping and two years for possession of a controlled substance in 2009.
