California Lottery Jackpot Hits Half Billion Dollars

If the winner is from Milpitas, what local cause should that person help?

The California Lottery Mega Millions game has a half-billion dollar jackpot for Friday night’s draw.

Let that roll around on your tongue for a while. Half a billion dollars.  $500 million. A whole lotta cash.  Any way you phrase it, if you win the jackpot you better learn how to say “new tax bracket."

The big jackpot could mean instant financial security for some lucky person and a chance at some serious philanthropy.  If a Milpitas citizen wins the jackpot Friday, what would you like that person to do for Milpitas?

Put your answer in the comments.  Tomorrow Milpitas Patch will publish a poll to try and determine readers' favorite philanthropic idea for a potential lottery winner living in Milpitas.

Spoiler alert: One of the poll options will be: set up a trust fund to fully fund art and music programs in all Milpitas schools and pre-schools.

Thank you for amending the language in the article from what "should" the winner do to "how would you like." From what I have heard about previous winners they are inundated with requests for help after winning. It's surprising to me that somebody who becomes wealthy from a chance is open game for these requests when people who have existing wealth are not. Sure they get requests for help but the emotions involved in the choices are very different and the support systems are very different. Most lottery winners end up in a worse financial position than before they win. That said I would like to see Milpitas supported by a local winner. If my ticket were to win education would be a major focus and not only the arts programs that have suffered as a result of budget cuts. I would like to see better health and nutrition education for everybody. It would also be nice to see some investment from the winner that will not only benefit the winner but the whole community. Maybe some investment and development of some of the vacant lots around town ready for the potential of attracting new business to Milpitas to support the revival of the economy. After all if the new stadium in Santa Clara attracts big events Milpitas should be ready to benefit too.

Perhaps a consultant could be hired to revew the city and school district from the private sector viewpoint and helt put their finances in order.

Milpitas doesn't need V.A. to manage Milpitas money. We dont need anymore consultants!
