City to Allow Pipeline Work to Continue in Crestmoor Neighborhood

Work was temporarily halted when a contractor accidentally clipped a two-inch gas line in nearly the same spot as the deadly 2010 explosion.

The City of San Bruno sent out a statement Friday notifying residents that work will soon resume on the construction of utilities within the Crestmoor neighborhood.

This work involves repair and replacement of sewer and waterlines that were damaged in the PG&E gas pipeline explosion and fire in September 2010.

The construction work was temporarily halted last Thursday, Aug. 2 near Earl Avenue and Glenview Drive, while digging with a backhoe, in nearly the same location as the deadly 2010 incident.

Immediately after last Thursday’s incident, Shaw apologized for the accident, accepted full responsibility, and agreed to provide additional safety procedures and protocols for the remainder of the project.

In its statement, the City said it has reviewed Shaw's new safety measures and will allow Shaw to resume the construction beginning early next week, pending their implementation.

City representatives also said daily on-site safety meetings will be held "to help avoid a similar future incident," and "close City oversight will be provided" for the duration of the project.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of September.
