In Brief Meeting, City Council Incumbents Appointed to Their Posts

For this week's Viewfinder, San Bruno Patch captured the special City Council meeting called to appoint the council members running for re-election because the race was abruptly canceled.

In a meeting that lasted all but about five minutes, the three City Council members running for re-election this year were appointed to their posts Wednesday because the election was last week.

Mayor Jim Ruane and Vice Mayor Michael Salazar were sworn in for their new terms. Councilman Rico Medina also sit in on the meeting. Councilwoman Irene O'Connell, who also was running for re-election, wasn't in attendance because she was on vacation.

Ruane, who was first elected mayor in 2009 and who has been on the council since 1995, will serve another two years in office. Salazar, who was first appointed to the council in 2009 after Ruane was elected mayor, will serve a four-year term. City Clerk Carol Bonner said this will be the first time in 10 years that the city won't have an election for City Council.
