Jan. 10-14: Trunk Removal, Retaining Wall, and Preliminary Work on Temporary Station

The $147 million elevates the Caltrain tracks above three existing street crossings. A new elevated station will be constructed between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, replacing the existing station at Sylvan Avenue. The city has retained a construction manager to monitor construction activities and ensure that the project is completed to the city's expectations.

In the past week:

• Granite Construction continued rough grading on the west side of the tracks from South Linden Avenue to the I-380 overpass and for the temporary station south of the existing station.
• Crews continued building the retaining wall adjacent to the I-380 overpass columns along Herman Avenue, removing tree stumps along the project limits as the grade dried and access improved.

In the coming days, crews will start forming and pouring concrete for the retaining wall required for the future temporary station. Day shift work takes place between the hours of 7am and 5pm and includes:

• Continuation of the storm pipe installation along 1st Avenue,
• Excavation for fiber optic and signal cables,
• Drainage improvements near the I-380 overpass, water line work in the vicinity of San Bruno Avenue and south of the current station,
• Installation and maintenance of storm water pollution measures at various locations,
• Installation of temporary signal poles at the intersections of San Mateo and Huntington avenues on San Bruno Avenue, and
• Assembly of track components for the future shoofly.

In addition, PG&E will continue relocating a gas distribution line in Walnut Street from San Mateo Avenue, under the railroad tracks, across the BART tunnel, across Huntington Avenue and tying into the existing line at Euclid Avenue.

Night shift work takes place between the hours of 8pm and 4am, and continues the installation of new conduit, cables and signal houses for the train signal system in the vicinity of Scott Street.

Watch for "no parking" signs along Herman Avenue from North of Scott Street to South Linden Avenue. The sidewalk on the East side of Herman Avenue from Huntington Avenue to the I-380 overpass remains closed as crews continue the retaining wall construction. The left-turn pocket on northbound and southbound Huntington Avenue at San Bruno Avenue will close intermittently during the day for storm drain pipe installation. Traffic will use the through lane to turn left and there will be flaggers monitoring traffic control.

Look for "no parking" signs on the west side of First Avenue from Pine Street to San Mateo Avenue for the storm drain operation. One-way traffic control is in effect within the immediate work area. Advance warning signs and traffic control delineators will be placed in the shoulder to provide a safe work site in conjunction with each day’s work.
