Need Cash? Unload that Dusty Old Firearm and Get Some Spending Money

Gun buyback program is supported a wide range of law enforcement agencies.

San Bruno residents who want to get rid of guns in their homes can receive as much as $200 at a gun buyback event in South San Francisco.

The buyback is scheduled from 9 a.m-12 p.m., Saturday, April 13 at the South San Francisco Courthouse, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco.

The gun buyback is sponsored by Congresswoman Jackie Speier and the police departments of South San Francisco, Daly City, San Bruno, Pacifica, Burlingame, Colma, Millbrae, Brisbane and Broadmoor and open to residents of those cities only.

"The overall purpose of the gun buyback program is to make the streets of San Mateo County safer for those who live and work here,” said San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks.  “There are many unwanted and unsecured guns in households throughout the county. Gun Buy Back programs provide an opportunity for people to come and dispose of them and get some money in return. We feel this will improve public safety in our county."

In a release, Speier said, “Fewer guns mean fewer accidents and fewer chances for guns to fall into the wrong hands.”

The law enforcement agencies are requesting anyone who participates in the buyback bring their weapons in the trunk of the car and to make sure the weapons are not loaded.

Eligible participants will receive up to $100 for rifles, handguns and shotguns and up to $200 for assault style weapons.
