NTSB Chair to Talk About Pipeline Explosion Investigation

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Deborah Hersman is expected to meet with reporters on Aug. 29 and discuss how the agency conducted the investigation into the tragic Sept. 9 fire in the Crestmoor neighborhood.

The day before the National Transportation Safety Board releases its report about the cause of last year's pipeline explosion, the safety board's chairwoman is expected to shed light on the scope of the investigation, but no new information will be revealed, the agency said today.

Deborah Hersman will meet with reporters on the morning of Aug. 29 at the NTSB's training center in Ashburn, VA, and discuss how the agency conducted the nearly yearlong investigation into the tragic Sept. 9 fire in the Crestmoor neighborhood.

Hersman will also likely talk about the complications the safety board encountered while trying to find a probable cause of the accident and how the investigation shared similarities with other pipeline investigations that have been done, among other things, said NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson.

Knudson said Hersman will not, however, disclose what caused the pipeline explosion at the Aug. 29 news conference. The five-member safety board will reveal the cause of the disaster at an Aug. 30 meeting in Washington, D.C., where investigators will present their findings and take questions from the board before revisions are made for a final report.

Mayor Jim Ruane, City Manager Connie Jackson and other city officials are expected to be at the Aug. 30 meeting to hear the report.
