Things to Know: San Bruno Cheer Squad Places in Top 10 in National Competition

Here are some important things happening around town that everyone should know about this coming week.

Events

Friday, Jan. 6. 7:55 a.m. John Muir Elementary will be continuing its walking school bus program with four routes taking place. The walking school bus routes will start at 7:55 a.m. All students must be accompanied by an adult and cross only at intersections. All routes meet at crosswalks and are designed to have the least number of intersections.

Friday, Jan 6. 3–4 p.m. On Fridays through March 2, John Muir Elementary will host Crazy Chemworks for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The registration deadline is Jan. 3.

Saturday, Jan 7. 10 a.m.–noon. Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, is coordinating a at Canada College in Parking Lot 2 at 4200 Farm Hill Blvd. in Redwood City. Parents and caregivers are invited to have their children’s safety seats checked for free. Certified technicians will be on hand to make sure child safety seats are safe and installed correctly. Inspections will be conducted on a first come, first serve basis. Studies have found that four out of five car seats are unintentionally installed improperly, which could result in a child being injured or killed in a crash.

Monday, Jan 9. The deadline for registering for the city's teen ski trip is Jan. 28, but residents should sign up as soon as possible. Teens will get to go to Homewood Mountain Resort. The full details are attached along with the registration form and trip policies, in addition to complete emergency information.

1. Florie Vasquez is now the new executive assistant for the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce. Vasquez said she is excited to work as the new executive assistant. She lives here in San Bruno with her husband and two children. She worked as a real estate agent for the last 15 years and looks forward to working with our local business community assisting people to grow their businesses. 2. Each year, Pop Warner Little Scholars hosts the Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer and Dance Championships. For the past 14 years, the event has taken place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL, during the second week of December. The Cheer and Dance Championships feature more than 300 cheer and dance squads who compete at the five-day long event. Cheer and dance squads compete in four different age ranges (Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Jr. Midget & Midget), as well as three squad sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) and three competition categories (Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced). San Bruno’s West Bay Rams Jr. Midget Dance Team (Brooke Monozon, Hannah Garcia, Isheba Smith, Kolotile Lataimua, Sammi Brewer, Isabel Hernandez, Alyzza Martinez and Katherina Havea) placed ninth in the
country, and we are very proud of them.

3. Winter holiday safety tips are attached. Have a happy and safe holiday season.

4. Free music and book downloads are now available from the San Bruno Public Library. Freegal Music library users have a weekly download limit. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to before you download. The library may have an overall weekly limit too. If the library runs out of downloads for the week, you can go to “My Wishlist” in the upper right corner and queue up for future music.  The downloads on this site are all in the MP3 format. This service will work with any MP3 player, including iPods, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs.
