Outgoing San Francisco County Sheriff Michael Hennessey was in San Bruno today to oversee a ceremony that began the , known as San Francisco County Jail No. 3.
The jail, built in 1934, has sat vacant since 2006 when a new state-of-the-art jail was built next to it off of Moreland Drive. It was slated to be torn down after officials determined that the building posed an earthquake risk.
Hennessey said demolishing the jail would be his last official act of business in office.
The entire demolition project is expected to be complete by December 2012.
