Things to Know: Tastes of San Bruno; John Muir's Walking School Bus

Here are nine things every San Bruno resident should know about for the coming week.

Here are some important things happening around town that everyone should know about this coming week.

Today. Dusk. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," will be the last movie shown at City Park for this season's . Contact Assistant Library Director John Alita at 650-616-7017 or jalita@sanbruno.ca.gov and tell him thank you for this year's movies, and ask him and the city to schedule free movies again next year.

Saturday, Oct. 1. 8 a.m.-4 p.m. AYSO soccer games will take place at the . The games are open to the public.

Saturday, Oct. 1. 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The city will be recognizing Arbor Day by planting trees in , nestled in the hillside of San Bruno on Rosewood Ave. Bring only your own elbow grease to help plant the trees. The city will supply tools and trees. For more information, call Community Services Director Randy Schwartz at 650-616-7181.

Saturday, Oct. 1-Sunday, Oct. 31. and the city will be teaming up again for Coats for Kids. This program was started by our own Assistant City Clerk Vicky Hasha and it is now under the Recology umbrella.  Throughout the month of October, numerous San Bruno businesses will put out well identified bins to collect clean, gently used coats is sizes for infants to adults.

Tuesday, Oct. 4. 6-8 p.m. The San Bruno Chamber of Commerce brings back its "Tastes of San Bruno" event. This year's event features more restaurants and more seating. For more information, call 650-588-0180 or email office@sanbrunochamber.com.

Wednesday, Oct. 5.  will hold the city's first "Walking School Bus" event by using the walk-to-school concept as a first step to changing community culture and creating environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old. Four routes will be used for the event. Some of the benefits of a "Walking School Bus" program are to enhance the health of kids by increasing their physical activity, to improve air quality by replacing car trips to school with walking and to create safer routes for walking to school. Wednesday, Oct. 5. 8-9:30 a.m. Our assemblyman, Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, will be providing coffee at no taxpayer expense at Cafe Mossant, 1400 El Camino Real, in Belmont for his Java with Jerry event. You can join him in converstaion and ask questions about your legislative concerns.

Who's Who and What's What

1. The San Bruno Education Foundation needs your help. With a $75 donation per family, the foundation will be able to fund critical needs at every school such as:

  • instructional aides
  • physical education instruction
  • music
  • the Mouse Squad, which trains kids to work with computer technology

All of your donation goes straight to the schools, as the foundation has no paid staff and the board is completely made up of volunteer parents. Because the foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, your donation will be tax deductible.

The foundation has continued its mission of putting funds directly into important classroom programs, such as Art In Action, the eCAP Reading Technology program and Parkside Intermediate's music program. The foundation has also given out mini-grants for teachers.

2. The city's Recreation Department is seeking Zumba participants. If you are interested, a class is being offered at John Muir Elementary's cafeteria for either once or two days a week.
