What to Expect From Wednesday's School Board Meeting

Teacher cuts, putting a tax measure on the ballot and approving a new tutoring program for Parkside are on the agenda for the March 9 San Bruno Park School District board meeting.

The San Bruno Park School District board for its regular meeting. Highlights from the agenda include teacher cuts, putting a tax measure on the ballot and approving a new tutoring program for Parkside Intermediate School.

With expected to continue to decline by 1.5 percent next year, the district is considering cuts for teachers. However, the proposal on the table doesn't necessarily include eliminating teacher jobs. According to a staff report, hours just may be reduced for both elementary school and Parkside teachers.

The school board is required to make a decision on the reduction before March 15.

The board will also be making a final decision on whether to move forward with putting a on the ballot if a special election is called in June. At the last board meeting, trustee Henry Sanchez suggested approving resolutions for both options to give the district leverage depending on what happens with the special election.

However, board members said they weren't looking to put both measures on a ballot at the same time.

"I've always been in support of a parcel tax," said board President Jennifer Blanco. "I feel we need to take care of our own because the state doesn't care about us."

"But then, I also see (the purpose of) the G.O. bond," Blanco added. "So the consensus was to put both on a ballot."

A public hearing will then be held to decide whether the district should approve a free tutoring program provided by Kaplan to increase the academic achievement of students at Parkside, which is currently in Program Improvement. The funding for the tutoring, expected to cost nearly $56,000, will be paid for with Title I money already set aside for the school district.

At the beginning of the meeting, two presentations will be held honoring the Crestmoor Elementary School students who in February and the Portola Elementary School students who participated the .
