Is the School District's Bullying Policy Tough Enough?

The issue of bullying was brought up during this month's school board candidates forum. What do you think about the issue?

Today's poll takes a look at another one of the hot-button issues that was briefly raised at this month's : bullying.

When each of the candidates was asked to respond to a question about the district's bullying policy, at least one thought the district hadn't taken a strong enough stance on the issue.

Another candidate brought up an incident at Parkside Intermediate last year in which the board voted to expel a student from the school for bullying and then later decided to let the student return, despite a recommendation from a group of principals to let the original decision stand.

However, according to the current school board, the is just fine the way it is. Although schools don't have a separate bullying policy, which is what a civil grand jury recommended, the district has a harassment policy that spells out how to deal with conduct deemed bullying.

All district employees are charged with enforcing the policy, the district says, but most of the responsibility lies with teachers and administrators at the schools.
