John Muir Kids, Parents Walk to School

The school held its first Walk to School Day Friday as part of the Walking School Bus program, in which a group of children and adults use their feet—instead of cars—to get to school to promote health and safety.

About 35 students and adults participated in 's first Walk to School Day on Friday.

The event, the first held in the city, was supported by the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and something the school is looking to continue every month, said Principal Fran Dunleavy.

Families will be encouraged to walk their kids to school on their own as well, just for health and environmental reasons.

Parents who took part in the walk also noted that the event, part of the Walking School Bus program, really made an impact on the entrance of the school at Crestmoor Drive and Cambridge Lane, which is normally backed up with traffic before and after school.

"For those of us who live nearby, I would would love to see this happen on a regular basis," said John Muir PTA President Nina Keys. "Our driving area gets so congested that the fewer cars we can get coming through here, the better off we are for safety purposes and environmental reasons."
