Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Jenna Spooner

This whiz kid was elected historian for her school and played on a traveling softball team over the summer.

Each week, San Bruno Patch will feature an amazing kid, youth group, teen or sports team that wows us with their accomplishments.

This week, we feature a sixth grader who was chosen to be historian at her school and who spent the summer playing on a traveling softball team.

Accomplishment: Jenna was chosen as one of the two Crestmoor Elementary School historians this year.

There was an election held at the school and Jenna had to give a speech. Only two were chosen. The position entails taking pictures of all school events.

“I felt very excited because I love to take pictures and I enjoy all the events at my school,” said Jenna, whose favorite subject is history. “A lot of students ran for historian and I felt honored that I was voted for (the position).”

Jenna also plays softball on different teams in San Bruno. Over the summer she played with the San Bruno Storm, a team that travels to different cities for tournaments.

“Our team came in second at regional’s in Sunnyvale and we made it to the Amateur Softball Association nationals in Fresno,” she said.

Right now, she plays on the Knockouts for the 12-and-under Fall Ball league, which travels around the Peninsula.

“My coaches and teammates are great and I keep improving and learning every time I play,” she said.

After fall ball ends, Jenna will play with the San Bruno Softball League starting in the spring.

Although she is only 11, Jenna already has plans to start doing community service to get as much experience as possible.

“I would like to be a Leader in Training at the San Bruno Recreation Center when I'm old enough, just like my sister,” Jenna said.

Motivation: “My sister (Mikayla) inspires me because over the summer she got her first job at the San Bruno Recreation Center as a junior leader and did a lot of community service work summers before that,” Jenna said. “She is also very smart and gives me great advice about school.”

She added: “When I'm interested in something, I want to try my best to become better at it."

Key to Awesomeness: “When she is passionate about something, she wants to learn more about it,” said Jenna’s mom, Judy Spooner. “She's very friendly, always smiling and always wants to help others.”

“She has a good heart,” Spooner added.

Plans for the Future: Jenna plans to travel when she’s older.

“My walls are filled with different types of maps,” she said. “I circle all the places I'm going to visit when I'm older.”

Jenna said she wants to attend the University of Hawaii to major in marine biology.

Her hobbies include reading and collecting.

“I love to read. I read a ton of books over the summer and my reading level increased,” Jenna said. “I'm proud of that!”
