Poll: Money From School Closure a Boon or Bust for Education?

One of the factors being considered for the San Bruno school closure talks is whether a school closure could save the district money. But how would that benefit students in the classroom? Share your thoughts.

Now that the school closure talks are underway, the committee tasked with making a recommendation to the San Bruno Park School Board is beginning to take a hard look at all its options for making an informed decision within a short period of time.

The committee was given a set of criteria to use to help make that decision. To make a recommendation about possibly closing a school, the committee was asked to consider the following factors:

  • What is the least disruptive option to students and the community?
  • What are the operating costs of each school?
  • What are the maintenance costs for each school?
  • What is the potential for each school property to generate revenue if it was closed?
  • What would happen if the walking distance for students was changed?
  • What are the transportation options for getting students to another school?
  • What is the capacity of each school to receive more students?
  • What are the implications of sending all students back to their “home school?”

Looking at all these factors, the notion is that closing a school would not only help the district balance enrollment but also save the district money. In addition to the fact that sixth graders will be moving to Parkside Intermediate next year, the district will still be faced with declining enrollment and shrinking funding from the state.

However, it doesn't seem clear how much the district would save if a school was closed. Neither does it seem clear how the money used from the sale of a school property would benefit students' education.
