Millbrae Woman Walks In Relay for Life to Honor Her Husband

Today would have been Paul and Sue Garrison's 40th wedding anniversary. Instead, Sue and her team will be participating in Relay for Life to honor the memory of her husband, who recently passed away.

Every year that they were married, Paul and Sue Garrison would take a short trip somewhere, go out for a romantic dinner and enjoy each other’s company for their wedding anniversary.

This year will be the first year in decades that won’t happen.

Paul passed away in January from liver cancer.

Today would have been Paul and Sue’s 40th anniversary, and every day since Paul has been gone Sue has wished that he could have been here for that milestone.  But it will still be special—although melancholy as well—as Sue plans to honor her husband’s memory by participating in San Bruno’s Relay for Life.

Sue, her two daughters and their friends will be one of the many teams taking part in the 24-hour event at Capuchino High that aims to raise awareness about cancer and raise money to fight all forms of the disease.

“This will be an emotional day,” said Sue, a Millbrae resident. “But this is the best way that I can honor him. I’m just lucky that all of these people are supporting me.”

It has still taken time for Sue to deal with the fact that her husband is no longer by her side.

But his memory is alive with her everyday.

Paul was a butcher for 40 years—most recently at Draeger's in San Mateo and took pride in his work. He also loved to golf and go fishing. But what made their marriage so special was how they did everything together, Sue said.

“We especially liked to garden together,” she said. “He planted the vegetables. I planted the flowers.”

When Paul was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and later found out that he was bumped off a list for a liver transplant, their family was devastated.

But Paul was brave until the very end, Sue said, and that gives her hope to continue the fight against cancer today.

“For people still fighting, I would say, ‘Don’t give up, do your research and ask a lot of questions,” she said.

For today’s event, Sue and her team, aptly called “In Paul’s Memory,” will be wearing special badges with a photo of Paul on the front. On the back, it will say “Relay for Life” and “April 28,” the date of their anniversary.

They’ll be selling baked goods and glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets.

That will be her way, she said, of honoring her hero: Paul.

“The best thing I can do is to just make him proud of me,” she said.

As Public Relations chair for the San Bruno Relay For Life April 27th – 28th 24-hour event and on the behalf of Committee Chair San Bruno Councilman Ken Ibarra and American Cancer Society’s event coordinator Julie Pierce, here is the background on our 24 hour event:

Approximately 26 teams will have booths setup around the Capuchino football track promoting their support for ongoing Cancer research and support to current cancer survivors so they can celebrate “More Birthdays”.

San Bruno residents are invited to attend the opening ceremonies, watch the Survivor’s and Caregiver’s lap and then beginning their walking.  It is hoped that many of the 26 teams will be scheduling groups of their team members to walk segments of time beginning after 10 a.m. Saturday and continuously until 10 a.m. Sunday, so there will be walkers from many teams walking on the track at all times.  You do not need to make a donation to be able to walk.  All we ask is that you register to participate so we know who is participating (for your safety).

Many team members will be camping out on the football field overnight.

The San Bruno Lions will be providing (at a very low cost) a Bar-B-Q lunch on Saturday, a pasta and salad dinner on Saturday, followed by a pancake breakfast Sunday morning.

Plan to stop by ANY TIME between 10 a.m. Saturday April 27th until 10 a.m. Sunday April 28th and see who is walking, join them in walking at least one (1) lap, and enjoy the offerings from the 26 team booths.

There will be a printed program detailing the various “FUN” activities happening throughout the 24 hours.  There will be a “Miss Relay” contest (men only can participate) with a talent portion, a modeling portion, and a Relay For Life question portion.   Bring your cameras.

This is the 4th consecutive year that Relay For Life has held their event here in San Bruno and it is hoped that the ground work (volunteers) has been set in place so that San Bruno residents can begin planning for the 2014 24-Hour event (last weekend in April) and future year's events.

All ages of participants can volunteer, walk, raise Cancer support funds, support survivors, and just have a fun time.

Plan to attend and see which of your friends and neighbors are participating and supporting the 24 hour event and supporting Cancer research and Cancer survivor support.

“HERO OF HOPE” Dorothy Lake Relay For Life of South San Francisco  Greater Bay Area Redwood Empire Region

"Our communities must be more aware of the services offered by the Society. Relay For Life does that and it is a fun way to raise funds."

In February 2000 I was diagnosed with Granulosa cell tumors, third stage ovarian cancer. Of course we were scared but after the initial shock, we knew it was a battle we had to win.  The statistic for survival of ovarian cancer at that time was 10%.

After surgery I was given four months of aggressive chemotherapy requiring a week of each month in the hospital. This treatment was usually used for men half my age. I was 62. During treatment I had blood clots in the shoulder and lung. I survived with the help of compassionate Doctors, Nurses and prayer of family and friends, I call them caregivers.

Needless to say, I lost my hair. I got a wig, hats, scarves and didn’t know how to react to comments like, ”you look cute.”  But that is what those who love you do, they encourage. I had my personal ‘Road to Recovery’ driver, my husband, Sam that made sure I was where I needed to be, even when I didn’t want to. I was blessed

I was cancer free for four years and became involved in Relay for Life. In 2004 the dreaded words, “your cancer is back.”  There was surgery and chemo again, less aggressive but I lost my hair again. You just do what has to be done. I survived!

I had two years cancer free and in 2006 the tumors were back, not as many but surgery was necessary, no chemo. An Oncologist said to me, “It’s like you have chronic cancer.” From 2006 to 2009 I have had five surgeries to remove tumors.

I have been blessed with a support system of family and friends from the beginning of my journey that I did not have to use the services offered by ACS. I am happy to be part of an event, RFL that presents these services as hope to others.

I believe I have survived because of medical science and research funded by events like Relay for Life. There isn’t much known about Granulosa cell cancer, but we walk and hope for a cure. I believe I am a survivor because I’m part of a greater plan and that might be just to share my story and give hope to someone who feels hopeless.

I AM A SURVIVOR  LIVING WITH CANCER, hoping to win the war and have many more birthdays.

Hello Relayers!

With Relay almost upon us, we are scrambling and working hard to make sure everything is set and that this will be a Relay For Life San Bruno to remember! The following comments will cover most of the basics of what to bring for Relay (and what not to bring).

Here are some general guidelines on what to bring to Relay  http://relay.acsevents.org/site/DocServer/What_to_Bring_to_Relay.pdf?docID=47268

Please do not bring stick lighters, there are no open flames allowed on the field or track (this includes grills and propane devices such as lanterns and stoves). Do bring battery-powered lanterns and flashlights.  In the past, duct tape, zip ties, and bungee cords have all come in handy as well as Sunscreen, chapstick, and hats (we are looking at temperatures in the mid-70s next week)!

Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco of any sort is not permitted at the event. No pets are permitted (except for service animals).

There will be designated charging stations for mobile phones, tablets, and other such electronic devices. These stations will have limited outlets, so please remember to share them with other Relayers.

For youth participants (under 18): Please complete these forms if you haven't already and register as well (relayforlife.org/sanbrunoca). One chaperon over the age of 25 is required per 5 youth participants and for a youth participant to remain at the event overnight (past 10 p.m.) they will be required to have raised at least $100. At 10 p.m., chaperons and youths will need to check-in at the registration tent to remain at the event.
