With Hands Tied, School Board Votes to Lay Off 5 Teachers

The hours for three other teachers will be reduced, and 16 people on the pre-school staff will be laid off.

The San Bruno Park School District board voted 4-1 Wednesday night to lay off five teachers throughout the district for next year.

The hours for three other teachers—two of whom are at —will be reduced, and 16 people on the pre-school staff—who aren't unionized—will get laid off, the board also decided with a 4-1 vote.

School board President Jennifer Blanco cast the dissenting votes.

As a result of school funding shortages and declining enrollment, the school district initially . But leaders decided Wednesday to hand out only eight pink slips before the May 15 deadline.
