BASEBALL: Mustangs Blast Mills in 4th Straight Win

Capuchino wipes out early 2-0 deficit with five-run second inning to take control against rival Vikings; hosts improve to 2-0 in PAL Ocean Division season behind 12-hit attack.

The Score: Capuchino 10, Mills 3.

The Star: Capuchino High junior utility player Tim Gretter did it all for the host Mustangs, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and punching in five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division game. The 5-foot-10 left-hander came in for starter Eddie Cecci and had his way with Mills batters, establishing the fastball and allowing no runs in his time on the mound on Tuesday.

The Turning Point: Capuchino trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but put the bats to work in the second, putting five runs on the board on five hits. Jake Steenvoorde, Alex Cordova and Gretter had menacing doubles which shook Mills’ defense. Gretter’s two-RBI double put the visitors up 4-2 before Cordova followed with a booming double.

The Quote: “You don’t lose to Mills, period. Regardless of the score, beating your archrival always feels much better than any other win.” – Junior pitcher/outfielder Tim Gretter.

The Bottom Line: The Mustangs have been grooving as of late, riding a four-game win streak in which they’ve outscored their opponents 52-7. Capuchino’s ability to swing the bat with confidence and capitalize with runners in scoring position made the difference on offense while Gretter’s vicious fastball secured the win against a tall Mills team. “I needed to establish my fastball in this game,” said Gretter. “I wasn’t really doing that well with it in prior games but once I was able to work it, I started to throw some off-speed pitches to switch it up a bit.”

Notes: The game was initially scheduled to be played at Mills but was changed to Capuchino due to Mills’ field conditions -- it wasn’t dry enough to play. Cap senior shortstop Cory Faubel hit a two-out home run to left-center, clearing the fence toward the tennis court. Faubel had grounded out in the first and popped up in the second before belting a two-run shot in the fourth to put his team up 7-2.
