Cap Names Shannyn Hollie Jones to Sports Hall of Fame

The former three-sport athlete at Capuchino High was among more than a dozen people recognized at the school's sports awards program on Monday night.

Former Capuchino High sports star Shannyn Hollie Jones, who played multiple sports at the school during the 1990s and went on to have an accomplished college career as a volleyball player at Howard University, was inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame on Monday.

Jones was recognized at the event among students and coaches, and in front of 30 family members and friends, including her husband, children and parents.

For the hall of fame induction ceremony, the school presented Jones with a display case, created by George Mutto of House of George, which included a jersey and mementos of Jones's playing days at Howard University and Capuchino. The display will eventually be displayed in the newly remodeled gym.

Jones was also presented with a framed "Block C" from Capuchino High’s sports boosters President Arturo Tudury.

“It was a joyous occasion that was very memorable,” Tudury said of the ceremony. “Ms. Jones addressed the assembled group, including former Cap sports teammates and coaches, current students and staff, and gave a heartfelt speech of thanks to her family friends, coaches, teachers and mentors.

“The speech was interrupted several times by a few happy tears,” he said. “Ms. Jones presented her own award of appreciation to her former softball coach, Wes Pearce, who was a big influence and help to Shannyn when she attended Cap.”
Jones went to Cap from 1989-93 and lettered in basketball, softball and volleyball, earning a scholarship to Howard University for volleyball and winning many awards along the way.

The hall of fame induction, which only happens every few years, was one of many awards given out at the Monday night event.

In addition to Jones’s recognition, more than 12 awards were given to Cap athletes:

  • Mr. and Mrs. Neil Wild Scholarship Award: Enrico Zermeno and Kristine Asuncion
  • Jimmy Johnson Award: Kelly McDaid and Jose Alvarez
  • Carl Reyna Sprit Award: Tim Gretter and Gabriela Tudury
  • Don Laclergue Sportsmanship Award: Lorena Misculin
  • Byron McCaughey Scholar Athlete Award: Luke Gray and Jennifer Lewis
  • Cheerleader of the Year: Monique Ramirez
  • Male Athlete of the Year: Lucciano Molina
  • Female Athlete of the Year: Jennifer Lewis

Outgoing athletic director Mike Trimble was also recognized during the event. The boosters club presented him with his own "Block C" for overseeing the school’s sports programs over the years.

Arturo Tudury and Mike Trimble contributed to this story.

Mr, Kiely, When they cut school days, isn't the savings in that the employees who directly work withRead More and for the children are deprived of that many days of pay??? Do the principals also lose 5 days pay? Does Hutt lose 5 days pay? Do the board members lose 5 days worth of their stipend. In other words, is the bad tasting medicine swallowed by everyone in the school district in a sincere effort to cure the ills of this school district Or is it just the teachers and the classified workers who are called upon to attempt a restoral of good health, the direct result of poor management and less than admirable leadership that has brought about ths crisis??

Mr, Kiely, Somewhere I heard that they were considering stopping contracting out PE at a largeRead More savings. Was that discussed last week? I was not abe to stay the entire evening. I question why they would have contracted for PE at the elementary level. Isn't that what recess and the balance of lunch time was for? Physical activity??? Thank you in advance for your always knowledgeable answer to my questions.

District cutting school days? The District is showing an agreement with the union which will saveRead More $200K. It doesn't show where the money is coming from, but the amount makes it look like they are cutting 5 days from the calendar. Dr. Hutt said at the last meeting that the length of the school year was still under negotiation.
