Three San Bruno Baseball Teams Win Memorial Day Tourneys

14-and-under and 15-16 teams record five-game sweeps; Gibbons and Aberouette lead 13-U squad.

Three San Bruno baseball teams completed Memorial Day tournament sweeps, winning their respective divisions at Burlingame and Foster City youth associations at the end of May.

The 14-and-under team dominated in its five straight wins at Burlingame, outscoring its opponents 43-11.

San Bruno rolled over South San Francisco 9-3 in the semifinals and then 10-0 in the finals. Pitchers Joe Galea and Rory McDaid excelled, as did shortstop Matt Montano.

Capuchino High’s Tim Gretter pitched an effective 6 2/3 innings against San Carlos, needing only 58 pitches . Serra’s Sean Watkins and Michael Foglesong stood out at the plate along with Cap’s Jake Steenvoorde.

“They all did a great job hitting,” said coach Jason Smiley. “They did the little things, they had sacrifice hits and everything that contributed to us winning. It’s hard to pick just one.”

San Bruno's second-seeded 13-U team beat host Foster City 6-2, highlighted by a three-run triple by Riley Gibbons. Felix Aberouette pitched six innings, only allowing one run and one hit. Robert Jauregui earned the save.

Rich Jauregui, Robert’s father, watched him and his brother Jordon, 13, simultaneously pitch for their respective teams in save situations as the fields at Sea Cloud Park were right next to each other.

“To watch that happen gave me chills, knowing that’s what baseball is all about,” said Smiley.
