Things to Know: Look Out for Street Closures on San Mateo Avenue

Also, don't forget about the Tanforan Mall Summer Camp, $1 movies at Century at Tanforan, the next S.O.S. committee meeting and the ice cream social at the library.

Here are some important things happening around town that everyone should know about this upcoming week.

Today. 1-2 p.m. A Tanforan Summer Mall Camp activity will take place on the lower level by Old Navy. The mall camp activities are for children ages 5-12. The mall camp runs through Aug. 9 and features a new activity or event each week.

Today. Beginning at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday July 21, as part of grade separation project, San Mateo Avenue between Huntington and First Avenue will be closed so that crews can place street bridge structures above the vehicle underpass. For questions, 650-508-7726 or sbgradesep@caltrain.com.

Sunday, July 22. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The San Bruno Chamber of Commerce holds its Sunday farmers' market at its new location in the parking lot of The Shops at Tanforan, just north of the El Camino Real entrance. Enter to win an iPad. The of the market's permit through November 19.

Tuesday, July 24. 10 a.m. Century at Tanforan will be screening another $1 summer movie.

Tuesday, July 24. 1-2 p.m. Explore the fantastic lives of beetles, millipedes, tarantulas, walking sticks, whip scorpions and more at the Insect Discovery Lab at The Shops at Tanforan (lower level outside Old Navy). Children will have a chance to hold and touch these marvelous creatures and learn about the extraordinarily diverse world of insects and their role in the web of life.

Tuesday, July 24. Join and attend the S.O.S. (Save Our Schools) committee meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. every Tuesday night during the summer at the Veteran's Memorial Building in the community room. Wednesday, July 25. 3 p.m. Cotton Candy Express will take place at Allen Elementary School's multipurpose room.

Sunday, July 29. 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The Clean Sweep Flea Market will take place. Call the Community Services Department at 650-616-7180 for more information.

Tuesday, Oct. 2. Tastes of San Bruno will take place from 6–8 p.m. at the rec center. To reserve your vendor space or for tickets, call the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce at 650-588-0180. There will be raffles and you'll get to sample good local foods.

2. The San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District July mosquito tip is attached.

3. LAFCO held its public hearing at the County Government Center in the Board of Supervisors' chambers and received comments on its current Sphere of Influence report that was recommending dissolving the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District and transferring its duties to the County Department of Public Health. The LAFCo Commission after a two-hour public hearing voted 6-1 to continue the District's status quo. At the July 10 San Bruno City Council meeting, the council voted unanimously to send a letter of support for the district. 

4. The city’s Culture and Arts Commission presented its year in review report and 2012-13 work plan at the council meeting this week. The commission meets monthly on the third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall Conference Room 115.  The public is welcome. A copy of the commission's report is attached.
