5:15 a.m. Tuesday - Welcoming Gathering

UPDATE:

This event takes place TOMORROW

Who will YOU see when YOU join us?

Many San Bruno residents are planning to be present at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday April 1st at the San Bruno elevated Caltrain station to welcome the first train to stop at the new station.

How Many of YOU will be attending?

Mark Simon with Caltrain provided the following update on the opening of the ELEVATED San Bruno Caltrain station:

“….. It is correct that we will start using the new station in San Bruno on April 1 and discontinue the use of the old station.

“We are holding off on any high-profile celebration or formal event  because the project is not yet complete and significant work remains to be done. We want to do a community celebration with appropriate city pomp and circumstance when the project is done – we estimate that to be early May. We already have begun internal planning for this event in my office and we will be coordinating closely with the city as the plans advance.

“Since the new station is ready for use, there is no reason not to use it now and it provides enhanced safety for our customers.

“1.       We will have Caltrain staff at both stations to direct people and provide information and guidance to the new station.

“2.       Caltrain personnel will be easily identifiable at the stations, but I don’t believe we will have balloons or whistles or anything like that. We want to save all that for the official event.

“3.       We have not contacted the city about the April 1 date relative to any kind of celebration, because we intend to do that in May.

“4.       According to the schedule, the first northbound train will stop at San Bruno at 5:37 a.m. and the first southbound train will stop at San Bruno at 5:15 a.m. These will be normally scheduled trains and they will not be stopping any longer than is customary.

“5.       ….. we will be planning something high-profile and appropriately celebratory in May.

The use of the new station is an important benchmark in the project, but it does not signify completion of the project and we think it more appropriate to hold off any celebration of completion until we are, in fact, complete.”

 UPDATE:

Caltrain to Begin Serving New San Bruno Station on April 1

March 19, 2014

Caltrain passengers will soon have access to the new grade separated San Bruno Station. The elevated station will be open to the public beginning April 1.

Since 2010, Caltrain customers have been using a temporary boarding platform on Huntington Avenue near Sylvan Avenue. March 31 will be the last day of service at that site, with the new station opening up a half-mile to the north at 833 San Mateo Ave.

Caltrain will continue to operate the same weekday and weekend schedule at the new San Bruno station. To ensure that customers are aware of the station move, Caltrain has posted flyers, placed notices on car windshields, and is adding alerts to its electronic messaging system and onboard announcements from conductors about the move.

There will be Caltrain ambassadors at the Caltrain station to further increase awareness about the change, as well as a social media campaign focusing on customer outreach.

In May, Caltrain is planning a community celebration to mark the completion of the grade separation project with local vendors and activities, speeches and refreshments in Posey Park.  More details on that event will follow.

The $155 million grade-separation project elevated Caltrain tracks at three separate crossings in San Bruno. The grade-separated crossings improve safety conditions for both pedestrians and motorists in San Bruno, while also easing traffic congestion to and from Highway 101. The San Mateo County Transportation Authority provided $92.5 million for the safety-improvement project, with the remaining funding coming from state and federal sources.

There will be 201 parking spaces and a “kiss-and-ride” lot at the new San Bruno station. A few amenities, such as an elevator accessing the northbound platform, will be added after the April 1 debut of the new site.

For additional questions or concerns regarding the construction project, please contact our dedicated outreach line at 650.508.7726 or email sbgradesep@caltrain.com.
