With Caltrain’s ridership continuing to surge and the Bay Area population growing, Caltrain is hosting a rail safety themed Reddit - Ask Me Anything discussion to encourage an open dialogue about safety near railroad tracks.
Caltrain customers and members of the public interested in the topic are encouraged to participate in the session with agency representatives on April 1.

Caltrain’s Executive Officer, Customer Service and Marketing Rita Haskin, Transit Police Chief of Protective Services Dave Triolo, Communications Manager Jayme Ackemann and Community Affairs Officer Tasha Bartholomew will host the AMA session from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Reddit, a social networking site. During that time, the representatives will answer all questions addressed to the online bulletin board about rail safety and security.
Additional details about the AMA session are available on this Caltrain Facebook Event site. Due to official Reddit protocols, a link to the AMA rail safety session will not be available until the day of the event.

The Reddit AMA session is part of Caltrain’s ongoing commitment to educate the Bay Area community about the importance of rail safety. Earlier this month, Caltrain posted an online video detailing a man’s near-miss with an express train. The video footage was covered by media outlets from across the nation, reinforcing the critical notion for people to pay attention near the train tracks and obey safety and security laws.
Last September, Caltrain teamed up with Fresh Takes, a local youth digital arts studio, to host a film festival in Redwood City focusing on rail safety. The video shorts from the teen filmmakers reinforced positive behavior around train tracks. In April and May, Caltrain employees will host rail safety information sessions at various stations along the Peninsula.
For the past 20 years, Caltrain has also partnered with Operation Lifesaver, a national non-profit that specializes in railroad safety awareness programs. It has worked with Operation Lifesaver to tout the importance of the Three E’s of rail safety: Education, Enforcement and Engineering.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain has enjoyed more than three years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 50,000 average weekday riders earlier this year. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad will celebrate 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the corridor by 2019, reducing diesel emissions by 90 percent and adding more service to more stations.
